FERGANA
Fergana Valley is called as the Central Asia’s pearl due to its riches and picturesqueness. Valley is surrounded by Tian-Shan and Gissar-Alay mountains, and only in the west it opens the gates to Syr-Darya river.
Fergana Valley always played important role in the history and culture of Central Asia. Information on Fergana state Davan was contained in ancient Chinese annals in late II century B.C., and during the medieval it was one of the leading principalities of Movaroun-Nahr. Remains of the bronze, early iron era settlements and medieval monuments remind that in the past the valley was the center of various civilizations.
Fergana Valley, large blossoming oasis with the most productive lands in Central Asia and wonderful climate is called by right the Golden Valley.
Fergana has been a center for oil production in the Fergana Valley since the region's first oil refinery was built near the city in 1908. Since then, more refineries have been added, and Fergana is one of the most important centers of oil refining in Uzbekistan.
Cotton cultivation and sericulture (raw silk production), with their attendant cottonseed-oil and textile industries, are important in the economy. There are cement and lime works at Quwasoy, oil fields at Chimyon, and sulfur and ozocerite mines at Shŭrsuw. Industry is concentrated in Fergana city, the capital, in Kokand (Quqŏn), and in the silk centre of Marghilon. The population was about one-third urban in the late 20th century. More than 90 percent of the inhabitants are Uzbek.
