Melon

Small description

Uzbekistan is said to be famous for its melons, reputedly some of the best in the world. Farmers of the Khorezm, Bukhara, Samarkand, Shakhrisabz, Tashkent and Ferghana oases were well known amongst Silk Road travelers for their agricultural skills. Over the centuries local farmers have created different varieties of melons that can vary in size, form, coloration and of course their flavour - from pineapple to vanilla.

Melons usually contain the highest amount of sugar in melons, while some hard-flesh summer melons contain up to 18% sugar, mostly in the form of sucrose (glucose and fructose are equal).

The fruits of melons are also important in medicine. In Central Asian ancient medicine, melon fruit has long been used in the treatment of tuberculosis and bronchitis, anemia and boils, heart, nerve, atherosclerosis and liver diseases.
