Small description

There are a large number of varieties of satin, and their composition sometimes varies quite a lot. But one common feature for all species is the predominant amount of cotton in the basis of the fabric.

The type of satin and its cost may depend on both the quality and the quantity of cotton threads used. And if synthetic materials are used in inexpensive satin along with cotton, then natural satin is always 100% cotton.

Satin is distinguished from other fabrics by a special type of weaving, in which the base of the material consists of dense threads, and thinner and twisted threads are used for the front side.

It is because the thread is twisted that satin acquires its luster.

Usually, when weaving satin, four threads are taken for the warp per thread for the front side.

The density of satin is quite high: depending on the type of satin, it takes from 85 to 200 threads per square centimeter of material. Thanks to this, satin is not only characterized by increased wear resistance, but also perfectly retains its appearance even during long-term use.

For example, satin bedding will only begin to lose its luster after 300 washes.

Satin has a number of advantages that make it a popular material for sewing various products:

  • This is a durable material that can withstand a large number of washings, so manufacturers of bed linen, which is washed quite often, prefer to use just such a fabric;
  • Due to the high density of satin, products made from this material do not wear out for a very long time;
  • Through the material, despite the density, air passes very easily, which allows it to be used for sewing both women's dresses and men's shirts;
  • Satin is a hypoallergenic fabric made from natural materials that does not cause allergic reactions.
