A painting is a visual artwork created (drawn/painted) by an artist, representing a completed form of visual art that is primarily executed on a two-dimensional (flat) surface using paints. Still life (from the French "nature morte" – "dead nature" or the Dutch "stilleven" – "quiet life") is a genre of painting that depicts inanimate objects—either naturally occurring items (flowers, fruits, vegetables, hunted animals, dried plants) or man-made objects (dishes, books, tools, household items).
Though it may seem simple at first glance, this genre offers artists endless possibilities to express their skills, styles, and philosophical ideas.
