The intricate decorations and decorative shapes of kandakori (engraved) items were in the past considered to be a protective charm against the evil eye and misfortune—they served as tools for protection, believed to safeguard humanity and contribute to its continuation, possessing a wondrous natural and spiritual power.

In the mid-20th century, with the emergence of factory-produced goods made from aluminum and other materials, these products became popular across all regions, leading to a sharp decline in the demand for traditional kandakori items. Nevertheless, true craftsmen continued to make decorative items, even if they were made of metal.

Among the branches of folk art, Bukhara’s kandakori craftsmanship holds a special place. When discussing modern kandakori, it is necessary to highlight the creative work and activity of Master S. Hamidov. His contributions must be mentioned. Master S. Hamidov was born in 1920 in Bukhara into a family of engravers. His grandfather was Hamid (a kandakor), and his father was Abdusalom X (a copper engraver). He learned their craft and enriched it with innovation.

He began his career by engraving simple patterns, which were accepted by local merchants. Master Abdusalom’s contribution to the development of copper engraving was recognized with awards and medals for his excellent work. Today, one of his creative works is the first lalida (metal plate) depicting the mausoleum of Ismail Samani, which can be seen at the Museum of Engraving.

Another historically significant piece of his work is called "The Animal World". Master Abdusalom created this artwork with the help of his youngest daughter. This story is worth a separate discussion: his youngest daughter, at the age of 5, was very curious. She was so interested in what her father was doing that she joined him during work. At that time, the master worked on a 60x60 cm metal plate and began engraving images of animals. He explained to his daughter how to draw them, and she enthusiastically watched, even offering her own creative suggestions.
