Uzbekistan Wins Gold at Asian Winter Games After 26 Years

The Uzbekistan delegation has won a gold medal at the Asian Winter Games for the first time in 26 years. Russian figure skaters Dmitry Chigirev and Ekaterina Geinish, who have been representing Uzbekistan since 2024, achieved the best result in pair figure skating.

Uzbekistan claimed its first gold medal in 26 years at the Asian Winter Games, which are taking place in Harbin, China, from February 7 to 14. The historic medal was secured by Russian figure skaters Dmitry Chigirev and Ekaterina Geinish, who have represented the national team since 2024.

In the pairs' short program, Chigirev and Geinish delivered the best performance, scoring 64.55 points. They were followed by pairs from Japan (58.49) and North Korea (56.68).

In the free skating program, the North Korean duo Tae Ok Ryom and Kum Chol Han took first place (112.2), while Uzbekistan closely followed in second place (111.88). Japan’s Yuna Nagaoka and Sumitada Moriguchi secured third place (109.86).

With a combined score from both performances, Chigirev and Geinish won the gold medal (176.43), North Korea took silver (168.88), and Japan won bronze (168.35).

This marks only the second time in history that Uzbekistan has won a gold medal in figure skating at the Asian Winter Games. The last time was in 1999, when Uzbekistan’s honored athlete Tatyana Malinina topped the podium in Gangwon, South Korea.

In total, Uzbekistan has won eight medals throughout the history of the Asian Winter Games—two gold, two silver, and four bronze.

More than 1,200 athletes from 34 countries and regions are participating in the Asian Winter Games in Harbin. Thanks to its single gold medal, Uzbekistan has risen to fifth place in the overall team rankings.
