In the evening program, Abdumalik Khalokov and Akmaljon Isroilov lived up to expectations, bringing Uzbekistan its fifth and sixth gold medals. However, Navbahor Hamidova and Jahongir Zokirov lost their finals to Kazakhstan’s representatives.
On the final day of the World Championship in Liverpool, England, Uzbekistan’s boxing team claimed two more gold medals in the evening session, bringing the total to six and securing second place in the overall standings.
First in the evening session, Abdumalik Khalokov entered the ring in the –60 kg final and defeated Brazilian Luiz Gabriel de Oliveira with a 5:0 score, earning Uzbekistan its fifth gold medal. This marked Khalokov’s second world title. On his way to the final, he defeated Turkey’s Mehmetkhan Chinor, Italy’s Giuseppe Canonico, Kazakhstan’s Bibars Jeksen, and Japan’s Shunsuke Kitamoto (whose cut eye in the semifinal prevented him from continuing).
Next, Navbahor Hamidova (–65 kg), the women’s team’s only finalist, took the stage. She lost 0:3 to her rival, Kazakhstan’s Aida Abikeyeva, and settled for silver. It was Hamidova’s second silver medal at world championships.
In the –85 kg category, Akmaljon Isroilov confidently defeated England’s Tign Stott to win the sixth gold for Uzbekistan. The 19-year-old had earlier defeated Australia’s Lachlan Lawson, Spain’s Ricardo Fresneda, and Austria’s Michael Fares Derouiche.
After his victory, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan were tied in gold medals. Everything came down to the +90 kg final, where Jahongir Zokirov faced Aibek Uralboi. In the superfinal, the judges awarded victory to the Kazakh boxer. Although Zokirov led in the first two rounds, his lack of activity in the third cost him the fight, and he lost on points 2:3.
On September 13, Fazliddin Erkinboev (–75 kg) had already secured Uzbekistan’s first gold. That day, women’s team members Sabina Bobokulova, Feruza Kazakova, and Aziza Zokirova won bronze medals. On September 14, during the daytime finals, Asadkhoja Muýdinxojaev (–65 kg), Javohir Ummataliyev (–80 kg), Turabek Habibullayev (–90 kg), and Abdumalik Khalokov (–60 kg) also triumphed in their matches.
In total, Uzbekistan’s boxing team finished the tournament, which gathered more than 500 boxers from 60 countries, with 6 gold, 2 silver, and 3 bronze medals, ranking second overall. Kazakhstan topped the standings with 7 gold, 1 silver, and 2 bronze medals.
Uzbekistan brought 18 boxers to Liverpool, 11 of whom became medalists, while 7 remained without awards.
